With regard to the conclusion, my interpretation is that Amy brought the dead body of Dan onboard and she is catatonic, in absolute state of shock with the whole situation. Further, there is no captain of experienced crew on board. The explanation for the stupid attitude of Dan is given after the death of his friends, when he confesses that he does not own the yacht. The story explores first how an inconsequential act may cause the death of people further, how fragile the human beings are under stress and in constant fear, leading them to panic and to self-destruction. The direction and the acting are superb, and the good screenplay has an ambiguous and confused conclusion. "Open Water 2 Adrift" is another great movie about surviving in the ocean. With the baby alone in the boat and stranded in the open sea, they panic and their desperation lead them to a tragic fight for survival. Once in the water, the group realizes that Dan forgot to put the embarkation ladder and the freeboard makes impossible to climb to the main deck the yacht. Later, the irresponsible Dan pushes Amy overboard, falling with her in a prank. Amy stays in the boat since she has a childhood trauma with ocean and Dan stays with her. Miles away from the shore, Michelle suggest to stop the yacht and swim in the calm water. They are introduced to Dan's girlfriend Michelle (Cameron Richardson) and they drink and recall moments of their past while navigating. A trawler passes by, hears Sarah crying, and we close with Amy on deck with Dan (whom, like her dad, she pulled from the water, but still were dead).Amy (Susan May Pratt), her husband James (Richard Speight Jr.) and their baby Sarah travel to Mexico to sail in the yacht of their reckless friend Dan (Eric Dane) with their common friends Zach (Niklaus Lange) and Lauren (Ali Hillis) and celebrate the thirtieth birthday of Zach. Dan, presumably guilt-stricken over everything, swims away from the boat, and Amy gets over her fear of water and goes after Dan, but he drowns (amongst more memories of her dad drowning). Dan finally wedges part of a broken into a crack, Amy climbs on his shoulders and onto the step (which cuts up Dan's hand), Amy lowers the ladder and goes to snuggle up with Sarah. James succumbs to his wounds as it starts to rain. Lauren swims off, against all odds to shore miles and miles away. Dan confesses he's a fraud - a mail room guy - and the boat isn't his. Michelle is weirded out by the blood, swims away, and drowns. Zach and Dan fight, knife in hand, and Dan stabs Zach in the stomach by accident Zach dies. James swims around under the boat, hits his head on the motor housing, and gets a skull fracture. They freak out, then strip down and try to use their swimsuits as a ladder, no dice. Unable to climb back aboard (slippery sides high out of the water), they start to berate one another. But no one puts the ladder down to get back on the boat. Amy checks on Sarah, then Dan tells her he'll help her get over her fear of water, grabs and jump into the ocean (Sarah naps alone onboard) Amy has a lifevest on, given her fear of water (and dad drowning years before). After sailing out to sea, all but Dan and Amy jump in to swim. New additions are Dan's girl Michelle and Amy's hubby James. Six peoples meet up to celebrate a birthday, a reunion of sorts (four of them, Amy, Lauren, Zach and Dan go way back, but haven't seen each other in five years), and go out on Dan's yacht.
