The castle, located about 50 miles north of New York City, can be easily reached in several ways. The boat ride on the Estuary Steward leaves from the Beacon Institute Floating Dock and takes 30 minutes. Through the nonprofit Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc., tours are once again given on the island, in addition to other special events hosted there. Today, the castle is the property of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. There were tours given of the island in the following year, before a fire devastated more of the property in 1969. The island was vacated in the early 1950s and was bought by New York State in 1967. ![]() In 1920, 200 pounds of shells and powder exploded on the island, destroying a portion of the buildings. He designed the buildings on the island himself - all were devoted to storing supplies, except for the main structure, which was a residence. So he purchased Pollepel Island in November 1900 to use as a safe location to store munitions. Bannerman’s business eventually expanded so much that it outgrew its original location, near the Navy Yard. ![]() The castle was constructed by Francis Bannerman VI, a military surplus supplier who moved with his family to Brooklyn in 1858.
